Which upscaler should you pick: creative detail or faithful enlargement?
Magnific, Topaz and Krea answer different questions, so the right AI upscaler depends on whether the output must stay faithful to the source. Topaz builds its pitch on fidelity: its Gigapixel page says "Don't just add pixels, add the right pixels." Magnific sells upscaling inside a creative suite of generation, editing and stock content, and Krea sells it inside a real-time generation canvas that starts free.
That difference decides the job. A product photo, an archive scan or a client's portrait needs the enlargement to keep what was there. Concept art and AI illustrations can take invented texture, which is what Rinzara's AI upscaler roundup calls generative detail and documents for Magnific's Creativity control.

What changed at Magnific: the suite that replaced Freepik
Magnific is now the name of the whole Freepik creative suite, not a standalone upscaler. The old magnific.ai address redirects to magnific.com, and the pricing page is titled "Magnific (formerly Freepik)", selling image, video, audio and design tools plus "250M+ photos, videos, vectors & PSDs" of stock content.
Upscaling appears as a line inside each plan rather than as its own product. Premium lists "Magnific image & video upscalers"; Premium+ and Pro Starter list "Magnific & Topaz upscalers". Credits are sold per year, 240K on Premium and 600K on Premium+, and the page says they are valid for one year with no monthly reset.
A buyer who wanted only Magnific's upscaler now pays for a suite, and a buyer who wanted both engines can get them in one plan. The page does not print a per-upscale credit cost for the image upscaler, so a price per upscale cannot be computed from it.
Price per upscale: subscription, credits or lifetime licence
Per image, the credit-based upscalers price close together: Let's Enhance charges one credit per image, about 9 cents on Starter ($9 for 100 credits billed yearly), and Upscayl Cloud Pro works out at about 8 cents ($24.99 for 300 credits). Topaz for Web Image includes unlimited image rendering, so its price per upscale falls with volume, and Aiarty's Image Enhancer is a one-time $109 licence for three computers, a sale price against $155 struck on 19 October.
The break-even is the whole subscription-or-licence question in one number: past nine months of use, a lifetime desktop licence costs less than the cheapest web subscription, as long as you have the GPU to run it. Upscayl Desktop sits under both as "Free and Open Source", and its paid Cloud plan exists for people without the hardware.
Commercial-use limits: the $1M revenue line and who owns an upscale
Topaz is the one vendor here that ties commercial rights to company size. Its pricing page says its web and Studio plans allow "Personal and commercial use for orgs under $1M USD annual revenue", and adds: "Buying Topaz for your business? You'll need Pro for full commercial rights." Topaz for Web Pro was $329 a year on the limited-time offer, against $599 list.
Magnific lists a "Commercial AI license" on every plan, and Krea's pricing page lists a commercial license to "Use all generated content for commercial purposes including marketing, products, and client work." Neither ties it to revenue on the pricing page.
Ownership of the result is a separate question from the licence. The Copyright Office's Compendium chapter on visual art treats faithful reproductions as lacking new authorship, and its Part 2 report on AI and copyrightability applies the same human-authorship test to AI-generated material. An upscale of a photo you own is still your photo; detail an AI invented is unlikely to add a copyright of its own.
Can a company over $1M revenue use Topaz for Web Image for client work?
Not on Topaz's own terms: web and Studio plans cover organisations under $1M in annual revenue, and Topaz says a business needs a Pro plan for full commercial rights.
Alternatives: Let's Enhance, Aiarty, Upscayl and Picsart
Four cheaper upscalers cover most of what the big three do for a narrower job. Let's Enhance upscales to 256 megapixels on Starter and 512 on Max with unused credits rolling over; Aiarty Image Enhancer is a $109 lifetime desktop licence that upscales to 4K, 8K or 16K; Upscayl is free, open source desktop software for Linux, macOS and Windows; and Picsart Pro ($10.50 a month billed yearly) puts a 1-tap image enhancer inside a full editing app.
Each alternative wins on one axis the big three do not: Upscayl on price and privacy, Aiarty on owning the licence, Let's Enhance on predictable per-image credits, and Picsart on doing the rest of the edit in the same app. Pick by reader type below, then keep the pick sheet.

Upscaler pick sheet: answer before you subscribe
- Faithful or creative: must the result match the source (product, archive, client photo)?
- Your organisation's annual revenue: over $1M rules out Topaz web and Studio plans.
- Volume per month, and whether credits roll over or expire (Magnific credits are valid one year).
- Largest output you need, in megapixels, against the plan's export limit (Topaz web Image: 32 MP).
- Cloud or local: do you have a GPU for a desktop licence (Aiarty, Upscayl, Gigapixel)?
- Do you also need generation or stock? If yes, price the suite (Magnific, Krea) not the upscaler.
- Re-read the price on the day you buy: Topaz, Aiarty and Krea all showed discounted prices on 19 October.

Frequently asked questions
Is Magnific the same company as Freepik now?

Does a Magnific plan include Topaz?
Magnific's Premium+ ($33.75 a month billed yearly) and Pro Starter ($82.50) plans list "Magnific & Topaz upscalers". The entry Premium plan ($14.50) lists Magnific image and video upscalers only.
Can I use Topaz commercially?
Topaz says its web and Studio plans allow personal and commercial use for organisations under $1M in annual revenue. Above that, Topaz says a business needs a Pro plan for full commercial rights.
Is Krea's upscaler free?
Krea's free plan gives 100 units a day, which can go to upscaling or generation. Paid plans showed Basic at $5 a month against a struck $9 on 19 October 2026.
What is the cheapest way to upscale images?
Upscayl Desktop is free and open source for Linux, macOS and Windows. Among paid options, Aiarty Image Enhancer is a one-time $109 licence for three computers, which costs less than Topaz for Web Image's $12 monthly offer after about nine months.
Do I own an AI-upscaled image?
An upscale of a photo you own remains your photo. US Copyright Office guidance treats faithful reproductions and AI-generated material without human authorship as not adding new copyright, so invented detail is unlikely to carry a copyright of its own.
